The Institute is committed to comprehensive multidisciplinary research directed at all major SIDS-related problems. This objective is accomplished by encouraging collaborative research efforts between members of the Institute staff and investigators from other institutions throughout the country. Research currently being conducted or planned at the Institute includes:
 

The search for abnormalities in SIDS infants

The study of physiological control mechanisms in normal infants and infants with abnormalities

The study of pregnancy-related factors

The identification of infants at risk utilizing physiological, behavioral and biochemical means

The effect of environmental and child care factors (i.e., sleeping position)

The evaluation of methods to improve the quality and cost effectiveness of care provided for infants at increased risk for SIDS.
